ANPR uses optical character recognition (OCR) on images taken by cameras. When Dutch vehicle registration plates switched to a different style in 2002, one of the changes made was to the font, introducing small gaps in some letters (such as P and R) to make them more distinct and therefore more legible to such systems. Some license plate arrangements use variations in font sizes and positioning. ANPR systems must be able to cope with such differences in order to be truly effective. More complicated systems can cope with international variants, though many programs are individually tailored to each country.
The cameras used can include existing road-rule enforcement or closed-circuit television cameras, as well as mobile units, which are usually attached to vehicles. Some systems use infrared cameras to take a clearer image of the plate.
Working 1: Image Acquisition
The proposed method is designed for real-time license plate extraction. Input to the system is an image which contains the license plate, acquired from a digital camera of the front or rear of the vehicle, and its Output is the license plate region.
Working 2: Create Database
Acquire image of every alphabets and letters convert to gray and binary then resize all images to one size and store as template in Matlab memory.
Working 3: Testing Phase
After acquiring the image perform gray-scale conversion, image binarization, filtration and image enhancement, binarization and smoothing process and Character segmentation horizontally and vertically. Then match the extracted image with the saved database images and print the recognized characters and send serial data to open a gate or not.
